Dear Whitworth Chess Club,

We hope you've had a fantastic weekend! There are a few announcements regarding Chess Club. We have only 5 club meetings left this semester. Wow! Our final club meeting of the semester will be Tuesday, May 7th. This is the week before finals week.

Our annual spring chess tournament is coming up soon! The tournament is on Friday, April 26th, 5:00-9:00pm in Hub ABC. Remember we will be serving pizza for dinner. To guarantee yourself a spot, register with this link: Register Here. This is open to all Whitworth students, not just club members. The tournament has 6 rounds of 10|0 games. (10 minutes per player per game, 0 second bonus after each move) Because this is a swiss tournament, the opponent you play for a particular round will have a similar score as you, based on your performance in previous rounds. For each round, you will earn 1, 1/2, or 0 points for a win, draw, or loss respectively. Once all 6 rounds are over, 3|2 blitz games will serve as tiebreaks if there are ties in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. There will be cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. We will also hold a raffle. Every 1/2 point you earn can be exchanged for 1 raffle ticket towards 2 prizes. We have not yet decided what these will be, but we promise they will interest you!

Our next club meeting is this Tuesday, 7:00-9:00pm in Hub ABC. Come get some tournament practice! If you have any questions, feel free to email me or Carson. Have a good week everyone!

==================================== This week's puzzle ====================================

White to Move: Win Material

==================================== Previous puzzle solution ====================================

Black to Move: Mate in 4

1.    ...     Qg3+
2.   Kh1   Rh6+
3.   Qh5   Rxh5+
4.   Nh3   Rxh3#

Notice Qg4+ does not work since white's king can escape to f2. Also notice white's queenside pieces are not developed. Delaying piece development is a common way to find yourself in bad positions!
